PowerShift
Par Owen, Monday 28 September 2009 à 14:30 :: General
For all our environmental-friendly friends out there, here's an event you probably have heard of. But just in case you haven't, here's some more info about it:
- Power Shift is an event created by young people for young people
- It will be the largest and most diverse UK youth gathering against climate change ever
- It will feature a unique new approach for environment summits, as it is designed by the guy who organised Obama’s grassroots election campaign.
So what's it all about, I hear you ask? PowerShift is about:
- personal stories and local concerns, building unity and finding the common solution (election/Copenhagen) > we are unleashing the secret weapon
- giving you transferable skills through other campaigns
It is listed as the number one thing to do to combat climate change on Oxfam’s website.
It will feature:
- hundreds and hundreds of 16-25s from around the UK: young people who are mostly novices in environmentalist terms,
- great speakers: Ian Katz, Emily Cummins, Peter Tatchell, Kofi Hope, members of the Stop Aids campaign, Leo Murray and Dan from The Age of Stupid
- plenty of workshops: George Marshall (UN ban), media, basic climate science (Neil Jennings from Student Switch Off), hopefully Chris Rose and Mark Thomas.
- music for your entertainment: live bands including Underline the Sky and Fur Coats
So, where do you sign up? And how's it going to pan out? Accomodation-wise, there are 300 crash-pad places, at a cost of £10 for 3 nights, but you may also want to stay with friends in the London area. Tickets are £30, though discounts and scholarships are available. See the website for more details.
